Genotype – Source – Genotype
one day workshop by antoni karwowski [pl] as part of PAS #20

A few hour workshop meeting allows to merely touch or signalize the topic, to outline the scope in which we are going to move, point at directions, landmarks and build a platform for the exchange of energy, emotions and experiences.
Of course I assume that the participants are aware that the “paths” found during the workshop are the new fields of artistic activity, that would open the way to subsequent fields, following the domino effect. It requires determination and being open towards new experiences, but above all, the searching analysis of one’s own behaviour, a kind of autodiagnosis.

The following description is a fragment of a long-term residency project
“Genotype – Source – Genotype” realised in Poland.
In Berlin I used the elements listed below, enriched with a lecture about the methods of artistic work, sources of inspiration, and in particular the role of “body memory”.

The basis for some parts of the workshop are the folliwing experiences: Jerzy Grotowski’s Laboratory Theatre, e.g. “Special Project”, also Ewa Benesz’s TAT theatre, and the experiences of other artists, for whom the formula of defining the sources of their artistic activity was close.
The specifics of the exercises / training as part of the method that I suggest, in the longer perspective makes it possible for the participants to “open” on the following levels: sensual – “Open the Body”, emotional, spiritual –“Open the Soul” and mental – “Open the Mind” which allows to achieve a greater self-conciousness and set the source plane for our artistic activity.

“Genotype” is a starting point for indicating a plane that cuts accross the previous planes. It is an attempt to define one’s own potential, to diagnose oneself (as an artistic means) and to become ready to build the relatioship with the environment on multiple levels.

“Genotype” as energy.
The next stage of the project is an analysis of the Genotype as a set of energies and potential emotions. The beginning of the creation process.

Of course these are only selected elements of the project “Genotype – Source – Genotype” .
I only wanted to show the direction and the most important aims that I try to achieve in my work. The reports of the participants of the workshop let me believe that some of my intentions were fulfilled.

- „I have to thank you because your workshop was a turning point for me and change me.
...as soon has i understand i changed all my approach... what you give us Antoni it's not an immediately thing but i'm sure now that your words and teachings will came wend i need them. It's difficult to put this experience in words.”

- “Your workshop had a deep impact on me. At specially the first exercises where we had to relate ourself to the space and find our "Genotype" in the space. I had some deep memories coming up. It was for me a good way to get new sources out of the space, that are already inside of me without knowing or recognizing them…… I liked the openness and honesty how spoke about your work and the sources of your work. It helps further in thinking about my own sources for performances and other artwork. The way of explaining that you shouldn't use to much material, with this paper between two hands I find a really strong images and If you don't mind I would like to use this example in my own workshops.”

- „Meeting you was a great experience, having a lecture with you was gold for my creative practice not only because I do minimal and conceptual art, but also because you make myself remember about the importance of feeling. Felling not only in the way we personally relate ourselves to our work, but also feeling the space, listen to it, touch it, smell it, taste it, love or hate it.
Suddenly when you made the circle I was in heaven it was a great present for my mind and soul I love circles. My skin was burning by watching you creating your circle! Thank you!
I would always keep in my heart the day I had a lecture with you, and now its touchable and perceivable in the performance I made and hopefully in the coming creative projects.”

Last but not least I would like to thank all the participants for their active taking part in the workshop, their being open towards new experiences and an excellent atmosphere that let me establish a very sincere, beyond verbal contact. Thank you for your understanding.

Special thanks should be offered to the organizers.
P.A.S. is organised professionally and it offers both professional artistic and teaching values. P.A.S. shows performance art to the young artists in a broader, holistic perspective. It offers a new quality on the scene of the workshop projects.

Below please find one of many opinions written by the participants.

„Genotyp – Źródło – Genotyp”
Jednodniowy warsztat performance w ramach P.A.S. Performance Art Studies / Berlin – Grimmuseum.

Interesuje mnie holistyczne rozumienie performance, z wszystkimi aspektami ludzkiej egzystencji.

- Energy Body
- Energy materials
- Energy structures
- Energy processes
- Simultaneity of processes
- Transgression
